NILLES FAMILY SEEKING TO PURCHASE BACK ISSUES OF THE LUXEMOURG WEEKLY / LUXEMBERGER ZEITUNG. Dig in Your Attic! The Nilles Family is seeking copies of the Luxemburger Zeitung / Luxembourg Weekly newspaper that was published by owner / editor Nicolas Nilles out of Chicago from 1902 until the mid 1940’s. Although Chicago based, this newspaper enjoyed national subscription.  Won’t you help us please?  Nicolas Nilles was my great grandfather and I have been doing some attic digging myself.   In researching our family history I discovered how important this publication is not only to our family but to everyone of Luxembourg decent living n the United States.  Another like resource of our cultural history and genealogical information found in its pages simply does not otherwise exist past when the Gazette ceased publication in 1918 until the Luxembourg News of America archive copies are available in the 1950’s.  Similar to the second edition of Nicholas Gonner’s Luxembourgers in the New World, it is our hope to collect as many issues of this newspaper possible to supplement our personal collection in order to create reference materials including an index of personal names cross reference.  Every issue we can recover, preserve and index will be cherished.
Should you discover any issues in your family archives, we are offering $25 per complete issue or $10 per individual page for any issues not currently in our collection.  For further information please contact dnilles@key2chicago.com.  Thank you kindly.
The first issues were published in German, then in a combination of German and English, finally in English.  Should you indeed discover any of these precious lost issues, please do not attempt to unfold or open the newspaper.  Our experience is that if not handled with professional quality care that the pages may literally split or crumble.  Although we have several otherwise lost issues intact and in our possession, we humbly request that anyone interested if learning in an ancestor is mentioned please be patient in any information request.  At this time our focus is simply on building the collection in order to have the most complete information available to begin our project of cataloging family names and references.  Although we are unable to answer individual inquiries at this time, the information will be forthcoming.  The Zeitung is back!

I am looking for more information on a defunct Luxembourg organization that was based in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota.  The name of the organization was the Luxemburger Unterstentzungs Verein [Luxembourger Mutual Aid Society].  This organization was founded in 1897 and was a death and sick benefit fraternal organization.  The group sponsored the annual Luxembourg Ball and a picnic in the Shakopee/Chanhassen area each year.  If you have any information, photographs, or memoribilia from this Verein, I would enjoy hearing from you.  The Scott County Historical Society based in Shakopee is also interested in learning more about this group.  Thanks!   Kevin Wester, Director of Development, LACS - kwester@luxamculturalsociety.org or 612-968-1974 Posted:  February 8, 2006
